Mountain Volleyball Club haul in silver


mvcThe Mountain Volleyball Club girls teams won three silver medals and secured a fifth place finish at tournaments across Ontario on the Jan. 19 weekend.

The MVC 13U Black team won silver playing up an age division at the 14U Girls Challenge Cup – Trillium Zone B in Cambridge.

MVC 13U finished first in pool play, defeating the Predators, 13U 25-14, 25-13, and the Hurricanes Blue 13U, 25-18, 25-9.

In the quarter finals, MVC defeated the Hurricanes Blue 14U, 25-16, 25-18 and in the semifinals won against the Predators Black 14U, 26-24, 25-17.

In the championship match, Hamilton bowed out to the Scorpions 14U team in a close 25-14, 25-22 set match.

The MVC 13U Black team is coached by Peter Stratford of Burlington, Kristin Kawamoto and Kaitlyn Mattiozzi both of Hamilton.

The MVC 13U athletes include: Elisa Mejia, Stoney Creek; Grace Heath, Khloe Mattiozzi, Felicia Malavolta, Taylor Morrison, all of Hamilton; Zofia Olejarz, Megan Richer, both of Dundas; Megan Grosso, Carlisle; and Christina Stratford, Burlington.

14U Girls Challenge Cup – Trillium Zone C

The Mountain Volleyball Club’s 14U team also collected a silver medal at the 14U Girls Challenge Cup – Trillium Zone C in Hamilton.

The team defeated Hamilton Smash, 25-16, 25-23, but lost to Niagara Rapids Blue, 12-25, 25-19, 15-10, and finished second in its pool.

Crossing over in the quarters, MVC 14U defeated the Waterdown Raiders, 27-25, 25-19, and in the semifinals hung on to overtake the Burlington Blaze 13U, 23-25, 25-23, 28-26.

In the championship match, Defensa defeated MVC 14U, 25-6, 25-23.

The team is coached by Larissa Puhach and Brittany Jackson of Burlington. MVC 14U athletes include: Meghan Burns, Meredith Elstone, Clare McGall, all from Hamilton; Rachel Dickenson, Carlisle; Nicole Dragus, Stoney Creek; Catherine Gracey, Dundas; Grace Laurat, Ancaster; Ainsleigh Williams, Mount Hope; Kate Keeting, Emily Arthur, Marija Cvetkova, and Ashleigh Reigel, all from Milton.

16U Girls McGregor Cup – Championship West

Seeded third in its tournament, the MVC 16U team placed second at the 16U Girls McGregor Cup – Championship West in Kitchener.

MVC 16U finished second in pool play, defeating E381 Blue, 25-23, 17-25,15-13, and losing to the Impact 15U, 28-26, 25-24.

In the quarter finals, MVC 16U defeated Hurricanes Black 15U, 25-29, 22-25,15-11, and the Scorpions, 25-27, 26-24, 15-11, in the semifinals.

The Impact 15U won over MVC 16U in the gold medal match, 27-25, 25-17.

The MVC 16U team is coached by Denis Levesque and Mike Hall of Hamilton and Meghan Boyle of Ancaster. MVC 16U athletes include: Kate Kalenchuk, Natasha Burns, Jordan Koslowski, Hamilton; Adele Olejarz, Charlotte Rose, Nicole Gwiazdowicz, Dundas; Alessandra Assaf, Ancaster; Madison Rowe, Glanbrook; Jennifer Todd, Stoney Creek; and Alyssa Borges, Binbrook.

18U Girls Challenge Cup – Premier

Seeded ninth, the MVC 18U Girls team placed a strong fifth at the 18U Girls Challenge Cup – Premier division in Oshawa.

Finishing third in their pool, MVC 18U kept it close in all of their matches losing to Lakeside, 27-29, 25-29, 25-21, and the Ottawa Maverick Shotguns, 25-19, 25-21.

In the pre quarters, MVC 18U came out on top winning, 25-18, 25-14, against Durham Attack 17U.

In the quarter finals, MVC 18U played soundly but lost, 25-23, 25-22, to the South County Bandits.

All eyes were on MVC 18U as they defeated the Ottawa Mavericks, 25-19, 25-22, finishing fifth in the top division in the province.

The MVC 18U team is coached by Jos Nederveen of Dundas, Mike Fuchs of Glanbrook, Kirsten Shepherd of Stoney Creek, and Laurie Fernandez of Hamilton. MVC 18U athletes include: Maicee Sorensen, Kaitlyn Mattiozzi, Jessica Klassen, all from Hamilton; Mary-Kate Alliston, Ancaster; Leah Sharp, Dundas; Kirsten Bialachowski, Caitlin Genovy, Stoney Creek; Randi Carey, Leah Feuerstake, Lindsay Vanderweide, all from Waterdown; Madi Taylor, St. Catharines; and Olivia Colling, Grimsby.
