MVC Black is good as gold

mvcThe Mountain Volleyball Club’s Black team took the gold medal at the recent 13-Under Challenge Cup in King City.

The MVC’s Maroon squad placed fifth overall at the tournament.

In pool play, the MVC 13U Black finished first in pool play, starting strong against Oakville Thunder Blue, 25-10, 25-16, and defeating the Markham Stingers Black, 25-22, 25-12.

In a quarter-final match, MVC fought it out against Markham Stingers Gold, emerging with a 25-7, 25-4 victory.

In the semi-finals MVC faced Niagara Rapids Red and came through with a very strong effort for a 25-9, 25-8 win.

Against Oakville Thunder White, the 13U Black played another near error-free match winning 25-4, 25-7 to clinch the gold medal.

The team is coached by Peter Stratford of Burlington and Kristin Kawamoto and Kaitlyn Mattiozzi of Hamilton. Team players include Elisa Mejia, Stoney Creek; Grace Heath, Khloe Mattiozzi, Felicia Malavolta, and Taylor Morrison, all from Hamilton; Zofia Olejarz and Megan Richer of Dundas; Megan Grosso of Carlisle; and Christina Stratford of Burlington.

The 13U Maroon team finished second in their pool, defeating York Eagles, 25-15, 25-16, but lost against Oakville Thunder White, 25-20, 25-14.

The Maroon lost a close quarter-final match against Niagara Rapids Red, 26-24, 22-25, 9-15, but finished strong with a decisive win over Markham Stingers Gold, 25-18, 25-21, to place fifth overall in the tourney.

The Maroon team is coached by Jerry Olejarz of Dundas. Players include: Brianna Quijano, Kaitlin Johnny, Ella Carter, and Sarah Reilly, all from Hamilton; Meaghan Boatsmith and Victoria Fisher of Dundas; Jamie Mataseje, Paige Entwistle, and Jessica Holmes all from Ancaster; Emily Keeting of Milton; and Shaelyn Francis of Binbrook.
