Hawks soar in OCAA badminton


The Humber Hawks dominated play in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Regional Badminton Championships at Mohawk College Friday and Saturday (Feb. 1-2).

Tim Chiu of Humber won the men’s singles crown. Mohawk’s Bert Micano finished third in his pool after going 4-2 in the round robin, while Le Nguyen was fourth in his pool with a 3-3 record.

In women’s singles, Carol Delacera of Seneca took home the title. Mohawk’s Eikcaj Navarro was 2-4, good for fifth place in her pool, while teammate Andreea Predoi wound up seventh after an 0-7 mark in the prelims.

The men’s doubles title went to Humber’s Ra Seang and Johnny Truong. The Mohawk team of Mohammed Nazimuddin and Kianoosh Moslemi were fourth with a 4-2 record.

Humber’s Tracy Wong and Renee Yip captured the women’s doubles gold with the Mohawk tandem of Tallia Bezemer and Jennifer Wagenknecht finishing fifth with a 2-4 record in the round robin.

In mixed doubles, it was Humber on top again with Ryan Chow and Suzy Yan taking the honours. Jazmine Hogeveen and Kien Tran of Mohawk were sixth with a 1-5 record.

Humber won the men’s points title and finished second to Seneca in women’s points.

The medalists move on to the OCAA championships at Centennial College in Scarborough, Feb. 15-16.

The list includes Julie Koopmans of Redeemer, who was third in women’s singles, and the Royals duo of Carla Hogan and Rachel Buys, who won bronze in women’s doubles.
