Mac storms Windsor after weather change of plans

McMasterWhat had been planned as a split-squad weekend became a group effort for the McMaster track teams this past weekend.

The Marauders were slated to compete at both the Windsor Team Challenge and the Valentine Invitational in Boston, but Friday’s snow storm forced organizers in Boston to cancel their event. So, the Marauders consolidated the group and fielded a full team in Windsor.

The result was a haul of eight medals over the course of the two-day event, with the women’s long distance contingent providing the highlights.

Marauders Victoria Coates and Jill Wyman finished first and third respectively in the 1,500m event, posting times of 4:36.46 and 4:41.0, while sophomore Laura Morrison won the 1,000m race in 3:02.12.

Coates and Wyman joined forces with Maddy Benjamin and Laura Sinclair to claim a silver medal in the 4x800m relay.

Taylor Forbes enjoyed a milestone day for the men’s long distance group, posting a personal best by a wide margin to finish third in the 3,000m race in a time of 8:32.37. Other notable performances for the group included a fifth-place finish by Jeremy Walsh in the 1,500m – whose time of 3:54.35 ranks 15th in Canadian Interuniversity Sport – and a sixth-place finish in the 1,000m race by Eric Barry.

Usual suspects Scott Hutchinson and Jessica Tat found the podium yet again in Windsor, with Hutchinson finishing second in the men’s 60m race in a time of 6.98 and Tat taking third in the women’s 600m race with a time of 1:34.89.

The Marauders’ 4x400m relay team of Abi Shanmugaratnam, Latisha Rhooms, Kara McPherson and Morrison finished third.

Brandon Huzevka and Paul Scholl both bettered personal bests over the course of the weekend, while racing in the same event. Both men improved their times at the 600m distance, with Huzevka placing seventh in a time of 1:23.77 and Scholl finishing right behind him in 1:24.11.

The Marauders have entered the final phase of their season, and will compete at the Last Chance meet in Guelph on Friday and Saturday (Feb.15-16) in their final tune-up for Ontario University Athletics championships held from Feb. 22-23 at Windsor.
