Strong performances at Ontario University Athletics swimming championships had a ripple effect for two McMaster Marauders.
Emma Mittermaier’s and Konrad Bald’s golden efforts were followed by their selections at the McMaster Athletes of the Week.
Mittermaier shone at the OUA championships in her rookie season, claiming two individual golds in freestyle (50 metres and 100m) and a third as a member of McMaster’s 200m freestyle relay team whose finish stood as a provincial record.
The first-year Marauder also added a silver medal to her tally on the final day of competition as a member of the 400m freestyle relay team, as the McMaster women finished third in the overall standings.
Bald led the Marauder men’s swimmers at the meet with two gold medals – and four podium finishes in total – while setting a provincial record in the 50m breaststroke. The Marauder veteran demonstrated his mastery of the stroke, winning gold at both 50 and 100 metres, and was in two silver medal-winning freestyle relays (200m and 400m).
Bald’s efforts were a central part of McMaster’s impressive team-wide showing at the championships, as the Marauder men won team silver behind the Varsity Blues.
