They didn’t win the match, but Mohawk will finish sixth in the West Region of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s volleyball and will visit George Brown, the third place finisher in the East, in a cross-over tilt this weekend.
Fanshawe Falcons rallied from two sets down to defeat the Mountaineers, 18-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-13, 15-13, on Wednesday (Feb. 13). That left the two teams with identical 9-9 records for the regular season, but Mohawk’s first set win gave them the tiebreaker over Fanshawe. Once the Mountaineers were up by two sets, the bench was featured for the rest of the match.
Brad Regier led Mohawk with 11 kills and one service ace. Last week’s OCAA Male Volleyball Player of the Week, Mo Sulaiman, had nine kills and Mark MacFarlene added seven kills and one stuff block. Aaron L’ecuyer led Fanshawe with seven kills, four aces and one block. Stephan Regier recorded 11 kills and one block.
Mohawk’s cross over match at George Brown will be played at 6 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 16) in Toronto.
The Mohawk women will not be going to post season play, but they certainly went out with a gutsy performance, as Fanshawe stopped them in a five-setter, 25-2, 25-16, 16-25, 21-25, 15-8. Fanshawe finished the regular season with a 15-3 record, while Mohawk was 6-12.
Melissa DeHaan had seven kills and six aces for the Mountaineers. Kristin VanHartingsveldt had five kills, two aces and two blocks and Julie Gagnon had 13 digs. Shelby Charlton led the Falcons with 14 kills, four aces and two stuff blocks. Brandie Ellis added 13 kills, one ace and 19 digs.
Wednesday’s action marked the final OCAA volleyball matches at the Fennell Gymnasium as Mohawk gets set to open its new recreation centre in the fall of 2013.
