Mountaineer women eye curling final

red-curling-rockThe Mohawk Mountaineers rink skipped by Erin Walker completed round robin pool play at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships on Saturday (Feb. 16) with a 5-4 loss to unbeaten Fanshawe.

The battle for top spot in their group was a real see-saw battle at the St. Thomas Curling Club. The Falcons finally decided the issue with a single point in the eighth end. Championship host Fanshawe finished preliminary play at 4-0, while the Mountaineers were 3-1 and will play Confederation of Thunder Bay, the first place finisher in the other pool, in the semi-finals on Sunday (Feb. 17) at 9 a.m. At stake will be a berth in the 2 p.m. Gold Medal match.

In men’s action, Wesley Steen, whose Mohawk foursome will not make the playoffs, saw their record fall to 1-6, losing 11-4 to Sault College. The Mountaineers led 3-2 after two ends, but then the Cougars scored three in the third and stole two in the fourth end to pull away for good.

The Mohawk men have one game remaining.
