The reigning national champion Mohawk men’s basketball team upped its record to 16-3 with a comfortable 74-58 victory over Algoma in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play at the Fennell Gym on Sunday (Feb. 17). The Mountaineers gabbed a 30-12 first quarter lead and were well on their way to their fifth win in a row and second of the weekend.
Xzennis Brereton led Mohawk with 14 points. Andrew Cicuttini scored 13 and added 16 rebounds, while Taylor Dowhaniuk also had 13 points and 12 boards.
For Algoma, now 11-8, Brett Zufelt scored 13 points and Samy Mohamed chipped in with 12.
The Mountaineers, who had already earned a bye to the OCAA finals, conclude the regular season at home Wednesday (Feb. 20) at 8 p.m. against the only team ahead of them in the West Region standings, the Sheridan Bruins.
