Buckle’s medal was one of two first-place finishes for the No. 5 nationally ranked McMaster men’s squad, as rookie Ahmed Shamiya won a 3-1 decision over Guelph’s Navrit Wirach to top the 57kg division. Chris Garneau (65kg), Kevin MacLellan (82kg), and Andrew Balach (130kg) added silver medals – each worth eight points – to McMaster’s team total.
Eric Steffler (76kg) and Kevin Barett (90kg) finished third in their respective divisions, each earning six points for their efforts.
The Marauder men’s total of 67 points saw them finish second as a team, trailing the overall winners from Western by six points.
The top performance for the McMaster women’s team came courtesy of third-year Nicole Mazara, who won silver in the 48kg division. Rookie grappler Nicole Roach defeated Brock’s Liisa Wainman (Burlington) to claim a bronze medal at 59kg for the Marauders’ other podium finish.
McMaster’s CIS No. 9-ranked women totalled 27 points on Saturday to place fifth in the OUA field.
Brock’s Jade Parsons claimed the women’s title.
