Mac shines with all-stars in volleyball

The McMaster Marauders’ exceptional Ontario University Athletics season was recognized on Tuesday (Feb. 19), as five members of the conference-leading team were named to year-end All-Star teams and first-year middle Dany Demyanenko was singled out as the Rookie of the Year. And icing on the cake was McMaster’s head coach Dave Preston being honoured as the conference’s Coach of the Year.

Demyanenko averaged 2.61 kills per set and 3.46 points per set in his first year as a Marauder. His numbers stood as team-highs this season. In addition to his individual award, Demyanenko was named to both the OUA First Team All-Star and All-Rookie Teams.

Preston took home the Coach of the Year Award for the second time, having claimed both the OUA and Canadian Interuniversity Sport honours in 2008, when his team was a perfect 20-0 in the conference.

Joining Demyanenko on the First Team was third-year setter Austin Campion-Smith, whose average of 10.23 assists per set ranked him third in the province this season. His inclusion is a testament to his growth as a player since being named to the All-Rookie Team in 2011.

Last year’s OUA Rookie of the Year, Alex Elliot, was McMaster’s sole representative on the Second Team, after an efficient offensive season that saw him convert 48 per cent of his hitting attempts – the highest average for an OUA hitter with more than 50 attempts. Elliot was also McMaster’s leading blocker this season, with 31 total blocks and an average of 0.72 blocks per set.

The strength of the Marauders’ rookie class was on full display, as three first-year players from McMaster featured in the seven-member OUA All-Rookie Team. Demyanenko completed his sweep of the awards on offer, while fellow rookies Stephen Maar and Jason McCarthy were recognized for their impressive contributions this season.

McCarthy and Maar shared playing time on the outside for the Marauders, both ranking inside the top 20 in the OUA in points and kills per game in the process. McCarthy averaged 3.26 points per game and 2.32 kills, while Maar was good for 3.07 points per game and 2.44 kills.
