MVC 13U Black become Gold at 14U McGregor Cup

Mountain Volleyball Club had one team win gold, with two others placing well as they hosted the Ontario Volleyball Association 14U McGregor Cup tournament this past weekend.

MVC had three MVC teams competing – MVC 14U, plus the MVC Black and Maroon 13U teams.

Playing up an age division, MVC Black 13U won the gold medal – going undefeated – after placing first in their pool and advancing through the tournament without losing a set.

In pool play, MVC Black 13U defeated the Selects 99, 25-15, 25-11, and the Oakville Thunder Blue, 13U 25-8, 25-11. In quarter-finals, MVC Black took on the ACTS Elites Inferno and won, 25-6, 25-7, and then fought past the MVC 14U team in the semi-finals, 25-16, 25-16.

MVC Black 13U followed with a solid win against ACTS Elites X-treme, 25-12, 25-18, to win the Gold medal and advance to the 14U division championship.

The MVC 13U Black team is coached by Peter Stratford of Burlington, Kristin Kawamoto and Kaitlyn Mattiozzi of Hamilton. Team athletes include: Elisa Mejia of Stoney Creek; Grace Heath, Khloe Mattiozzi, Felicia Malavolta, and Taylor Morrison, all of Hamilton; Zofia Olejarz and Megan Richer of Dundas; Megan Grosso of Carlisle; and Christina Stratford of Burlington.

MVC 14U finishes fourth

The MVC 14U team finished fourth overall, losing to the Hurricanes Black 13U team in the bronze medal match.

Finishing first in their pool, MVC 14U defeated ACTS Elites X-treme 14-25, 25-11, 15-9 and the Selects 00 25-11, 25-16. In the quarter finals, MVC 14U defeated the MVC Maroon 13U 25-11, 25-11 and then lost to MVC Black 13U 25-16, 25-16 in the semifinals.

MVC 14U lost a close Bronze medal match to the Hurricanes Black 13U 10-25, 25-16 and 14-16 to finish fourth overall.

The team is coached by Larissa Puhach and Brittany Jackson of Burlington. The MVC 14U athletes include Meghan Burns, Meredith Elstone, and Clare McGall of Hamilton, Nicole Dragus of Stoney Creek, Catherine Gracey of Dundas, Grace Laurat of Ancaster, Ainsleigh Williams of Mount Hope, Rachel Dickenson of Carlisle, plus Kate Keeting, Emily Arthur, Marija Cvetkova, and Ashleigh Reigel all of Milton.

MVC Maroon 13U show solid effort

Playing up an age division, the MVC Maroon 13U finished with a solid seventh.

Second in their pool, MVC Maroon 13U defeated the ACTS Elite Inferno 25-11, 25-13 and lost to the Hurricanes Black 13U 6-25, 25-17, 4-15. In the quarter finals, MVC Maroon 13U was defeated by MVC 14U 25-11, 25-11 and lost 21-25, 25-11, 5-15 to the Selects 99.

The MVC Maroon 13U team is coached by Jerry Olejarz of Dundas. Athletes include Brianna Quijano, Kaitlin Johnny, Ella Carter, and Sarah Reilly of Hamilton, Jamie Mataseje, Paige Entwistle, and Jessica Holmes from Ancaster, Meaghan Boatsmith and Victoria Fisher of Dundas, Shaelyn Francis of Binbrook, and Emily Keeting from Milton.
