Mac volleyball duo earn OUA honours

The Marauders’ two graduating, fifth-year volleyball seniors were both recognized by Ontario University Athletics on Tuesday (Feb.19), as libero Meagan Nederveen was the recipient of the 2013 Award of Merit and middle hitter Shannon McRobert was named as a Second Team All-Star.

Nederveen was rewarded for her balanced commitment to excellence on the volleyball court, in the classroom and in her communal volunteer work. The fifth-year libero tallied 261 digs – the fourth-highest total in OUA – while starting every match of the Marauders’ 2012-13 campaign as the team’s captain.

The Honours Kinesiology student was named as a Marauder Scholar and Academic All-Canadian in January, having achieved an academic average above 9.5 in the 2011-12 session.

Her off-court activities are extensive and well-documented, as Nederveen plays a leading role within McMaster’s Mac Athletes Care project as well as the Mountain Volleyball Club’s VolleyTotz initiative – designed to engage young children in physical activity and volleyball in particular. She volunteers with several local hospitals in the field of speech pathology, aiding in the recovery of stroke victims, and travelled to the Dominican Republic a year ago to build a house as part of the McMaster chapter of the DREAMS program.

Meanwhile, McRobert’s inclusion on the OUA Second Team comes as no surprise, given her exceptional performance this season in her final year of eligibility. The fifth-year middle led OUA in total blocks with 65.5 – placing her third in the country in that category – and added 130 kills.
