Volleyball got a big boost in Hamilton after weekend play in Ontario University Athletics and Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championship finals.
McMaster Marauders claimed the OUA men’s championship, Mohawk took the silver medal in the men’s OCAA final and Redeemer laid claim to the OCAA bronze in the same division.
Individual honours went to the Marauders’ Dave Preston, who was OUA coach of the year, while Redeemer’s Wayne Harris was the OCAA’s coach of the year and is nominated for the same honour in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association.
Marauder Danny Demyanenko was the OUA Rookie of the Year in addition to making two all-star teams – the OUA First Team and the OUA All-Rookie Team. Teammates joining him as all-stars were Austin Campion-Smith, First Team, Alex Elliot, Second Team, and Jayson McCarthy and Stephen Maar, All-Rookie Team.
McMaster’s Jori Mantha was named Most Valuable Player in the championship game.
From Redeemer, making the OCAA First Team All-Stars were Jake Klassen and David Klomps while Eric Heidbuurt was selected to the Second Team. David Klomps was named a tournament all-star.
From Mohawk, Mo Sulaiman and Trevor McLaughlin were selected as tournament all-stars.
