Catholic reps clear first hurdles in OFSAA play

ofsaaThe Hamilton Catholic league representatives got off to good starts in opening day competition at Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys’ Quad A basketball and girls Triple A volleyball in Windsor.

The fifth-seeded Cardinal Newman basketball team routed Chatham’s Ursuline College, 57-20, and then topped Brother Andre of York, 73-52. A. J. Manguerra netted 25 points in the two games while teammate David McCulloch added another 21. Daniel Petermann led all scorers against Brother Andre with 15 points.

The tournament continues today.

In volleyball, the 10th seeded Bishop Ryan Celtics advanced to the quarter-finals by finishing with a 2-1 record in pool play. The Celtics defeated Guelph’s St. James, 2-0, lost to Ottawa’s Franco Cite, 2-0, and blanked Peterborough’s St. Peter’s, 2-0.

The ACMT Jaguars of the Hamilton Catholic league are No. 1 seeds in boys’ AA basketball at Markham. The Jaguars got 19 points by Jean-Victor Mukama in an opening 80-51 victory over Arnprior.
