MVC teams harvest volleyball medals

The Mountain Volleyball Club’s 13-Under and 14U teams won gold, silver and bronze in respective Ontario Volleyball Association tournaments on the weekend.

In Hamilton, the MVC 13U Black team won a Gold medal and the MVC 13U Maroon team won Bronze at the 13U McGregor Cup (Trillium B).

Finishing first in their pool, MVC Black defeated the Niagara Rapids Red and the Waterdown Raiders, both in straight sets, before sweeping the Brant Tornadoes in straight sets in the quarter-finals.

In the semifinals, MVC Black advanced after winning in straight sets over the Niagara Rapids Blue and then defeated the Niagara Rapids Black, 2-1, to win the Gold medal.

The 13U Black team is coached by Peter Stratford of Burlington and Kristin Kawamoto and Kaitlyn Mattiozzi of Hamilton. Players include: Elisa Mejia of Stoney Creek; Grace Heath, Khloe Mattiozzi, Felicia Malavolta, and Taylor Morrison, all of Hamilton; Zofia Olejarz and Megan Richer of Dundas; Megan Grosso of Carlisle; and Christina Stratford of Burlington.

The 13U Maroon team was first in its pool defeating the Guelph Grizzlies and the Niagara Rapids Blue both in straight sets. In the quarter-finals, MVC downed the Niagara Rapids Red in straight sets and lost, 2-1, to the Niagara Rapids Black in the semi-finals. The Maroon came back to win the Bronze medal over the Niagara Rapids Blue in straight sets.

The Maroon team is coached by Jerry Olejarz of Dundas. Players include: Brianna Quijano, Kaitlin Johnny, Ella Carter, and Sarah Reilly, all of Hamilton; Meaghan Boatsmith and Victoria Fisher of Dundas; Jamie Mataseje, Paige Entwistle, and Jessica Holmes, all of Ancaster; Emily Keeting of Milton; and Shaelyn Francis of Binbrook.

The MVC 14U team played up an age division and claimed a Silver medal at the 15U Girls Bugarski Cup (Trillium C) in St. Catharines.

The 14U team finished first in pool play, defeating the Niagara Rapids Blue, 2-1, and the Ancaster Lions in straight sets. In the quarters, MVC stepped past the Niagara Rapids Black 15U, 2-1, and the ACTS Elites, 2-1, in the semi-finals.

In the Gold medal match, MVC lost to Hamilton Smash in straight sets.

The MVC 14U team is coached by Larissa Puhach and Brittany Jackson of Burlington. Players are Meghan Burns, Meredith Elstone, and Clare McGall, all of Hamilton; Rachel Dickenson of Carlisle; Nicole Dragus, of Stoney Creek; Catherine Gracey of Dundas; Grace Laurat of Ancaster; Ainsleigh Williams of Mount Hope; Kate Keeting, Emily Arthur, Marija Cvetkova, and Ashleigh Reigel, all of Milton.
