St. John’s, Newfoundland – Twenty-three shots on net won’t win many hockey games, as the Hamilton Bulldogs found out on Friday night (March 15). Nor will letting in 50 per cent of the shots you face as a goaltender produced a ‘W’.

Those combined efforts gave the St. John’s IceCaps a 5-0 American Hockey League win over the Bulldogs who were outshot 32-23 at Mile One Centre.

Hamilton starting goalie Robert Mayer was relieved of his netminding duties after three of the six shots he looked at found their way into the back of the net. Dustin Tokarski finished the game for Hamilton and had two of 26 shots elude him.

Aaron Gagnon and Eric O’Dell both scored a goal and added an assist for the IceCaps while Mark Dekanich earned the shutout.

The IceCaps wasted little time in getting started and needed just 96 seconds to score what would stand as the winning goal. Aaron Gagnon skated into the offensive zone and promptly deposited the puck behind Mayer for a shorthanded tally.

Five minutes later Kael Mouillierat’s shot bounced off the glove of Mayer and dropped into the net for a power-play marker.

When Eric O’Dell added a third goal two minutes later, Mayer gave way to Tokarski.

The IceCaps increased their lead to four as Josh Lunden spun and shot the puck through the legs of Tokarski at 7:51 of the second stanza. Jason Jaffray gave St. John’s its final goal on the power play at 14:27 of the second frame.

The two American Hockey League teams play again Saturday (March 16) in St. John’s.
