There was no Down East hospitality to be found by the Hamilton Bulldogs visiting the St. John’s IceCaps this weekend.
For the second time in as many nights the Icecaps defeated the Bulldogs, 4-3, in American Hockey League play on Saturday (March 15) at Mile One Centre.
Eric O’Dell scored two goals and added two assists while Josh Lunden scored the game-winner with 26 seconds left in the third period.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 5:52 of the first period on a goal by Patrick Holland. Nathan Beaulieu joined the rush and feathered a pass to Holland who made no mistake and put the puck behind goaltender Mark Dekanich, who blanked the Bulldogs on Friday night.
The ‘Dogs took a 2-0 lead two minutes later as Tyler Murovich put the puck off the post and Philippe Lefebvre buried the rebound past Dekanich.
St. John’s got on the board at 15:47 of the period as O’Dell shot the puck from the slot and Raymond Sawada tipped the shot through the legs of goalie Dustin Tokarski.
Hamilton regained a two-goal lead with just over three minutes left in the opening 20 minutes when Murovich scored.
After a scoreless second period, the IceCaps cut the lead to one as O’Dell scored his first of the night early in the period. St. John’s tied the score with 2:07 left in the third stanza on O’Dell’s second tally of the game. This marked the first time in Tokarski’s nine games with the team that the netminder had surrendered more than two goals.
The IceCaps grabbed a 4-3 lead with only 26 seconds left in the third period as Josh Lunden put a loose puck past Tokarski.
Hamilton was outshot 36-19.
