Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! features recreational and competitive 4-on-4 street hockey tournament divisions for boys, girls, men, and women of all ages and skill levels. Winners in all divisions receive prizes, including championship t-shirts, and all youth division winners take home commemorative trophies as well.
This season marks the tenth anniversary of the program, which was designed to celebrate a version of the game that captures the imagination and innocence of Canadian youth, helping kids to feel like NHL pros and helping adults feel like kids again.
Winners and finalists in Elite Male (19+), Elite Female (19+), Grinders (U19), and Enforcers (U17) divisions from this event will be invited to join winners of the other 20 events taking place across Canada in competing for the 2013 Redwood Cup National Championships in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Sept. 26-28. Winners of the Redwood Cup are recognized as Canada’s Greatest Street Hockey Players.
Hamilton will be host to local personalities who will compete in the Celebrity Game at noon on Saturday. Not to be missed is Becky Keller, three-time gold medalist with Canada’s Women’s Olympic Hockey Team. The event has been moved back to Mohawk College, where P10 has been undergoing some asphalt repairs to improve the playing surface.
In addition to 30 street hockey ‘rinks’, spectators and players can enjoy a variety of other activities. Bruiser, the Hamilton Bulldogs’ mascot and Mo the Hawk, from Mohawk College will be on site as well as the Hamilton Nationals Lacrosse Cheerleaders.
There will be a variety of food vendors including Country Boys, Pig Out Roasters, The Meatball Shoppe, Kool Jim’s Ice Cream, Major League Sales and Booster Juice. Gongshow Gear will also be on site with a tent and merchandise as the official sponsor of Lifestyle Apparel Hockey Wear.
A new addition to the Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! program is the UPS Corporate Division, which will feature 10 teams competing for a replica Redwood Cup. Proceeds from this division will support Right To Play, an international children’s charity.
More program information which is now the largest sports festival in Canada, can be found at www.playon.ca. Registration closes Tuesday, May 7 at midnight.
