Green faces doubles partner in singles semi

Racquetball5Langley, B.C. – The top four men’s seeds all won their respective quarter-final matches on Thursday (May 23) to reach the semi-finals of the 2013 Canadian Racquetball Championships in Langley, B.C. But second seed Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon has given a major scare as Kurtis Cullen of Brandon, Man. forced him to a tie-breaker before Landeryou won it, 15-5, 11-15, 12-10.

The other three top seeds all won their matches in two straight. Men’s No. 1 seed Mike Green of Burlington, defeated Pedro Castro of Brossard, Que., 15-9, 15-4. He’ll face Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta., who was a winner over James Landeryou of Saskatoon, 15-2, 15-5, in what will be a battle of doubles partners, as Green and Iwaasa won the Men’s Open Doubles title on Tuesday.

Finally, Nathanial Husulak of Saskatoon defeated former Canadian Champion and sixth seed Corey Osborne of Penetanguishene, Ont., 15-11, 15-4. Husulak was to face Tim Landeryou in the semis.

In the Landeryou-Cullen match, it was Cullen who had the lead in the tie-breaker at 6-1. But Landeryou didn’t quit and pecked away at the lead to tie the game at 7-7, and then take the lead at 8-7.

Cullen, who used his powerful drive serve throughout the match, pulled back ahead at 9-8, only to see Landeryou respond with two points of his own to get to match point at 10-9.

But Cullen made two forehand pinch shots to get the serve back and then level the score at 10-10. But he couldn’t get another point, as Landeryou made two winners to end the game and the match at 12-10.

Ancaster’s Eris Desrochers, seeded seventh, lost to No. 10 seed Kurtis Cullen of Brandon, Man., 15-8, 15-10.

Of the four remaining players, only Green has won the national championship previously, and he’s done so eight times. But Iwaasa is the current U18 Canadian Junior Champion and Landeryou won both National Team Selection Events, including a win over Green in February.
