Cardinals shot down by Red Sox offence

ibl logoThe Brantford Red Sox registered runs in all but two innings as they handily defeated the Hamilton Cardinals, 12-3, in senior Intercounty Baseball League play on Saturday (June 1).

The win for Brantford (9-2) was the Red Sox fourth straight, while Hamilton suffered its 14th straight regular season loss against the Red Sox dating back to Sunday, July 18, 2010.

Red Sox starter Chris Chavez earned his first win of the season, giving up eight hits and three earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts over six innings pitched.

There was no shortage of offence for the Red Sox, who posted 18 hits on the day, and saw production from every single batter in their lineup. There were three home run hitters, including designated hitter Todd Betts who went 4-for-6 with three singles and a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Wayne Forman was 3-for-4 with two singles and a home run and Terrell Alliman singled and homered with three RBI and two runs scored.

Tyler Patzalek had a pair of hits, two RBI and a run scored, and Jason Gotwalt and Hyung Cho each had two hits, with Gotwalt adding two runs scored. Tyler Burnell singled, drove in a run and scored twice, and Lee Delfino singled and scored a run. Joe Colameco added a double and a run scored to round out the Brantford offence.

Benson Merritt was the loser for the Cardinals, allowing 11 hits and nine runs – six earned – with six walks and one strikeout over 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Zack Sardellitti doubled, scored and registered the lone RBI for the Cardinals (2-7), while Dre Celestijn singled and doubled and Kyle Gappa had a pair of hits and a run scored. Anthony Rizquez doubled and scored, while Andris Rizquez, Ryan Taylor and Matt Gottschalk each added hits in the loss.

The Cards are back in action on Sunday (June 2) when the Barrie Baycats visit Bernie Arbour Stadium for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
