HWMFA-LogoThe Hamilton Wentworth Minor Football Association reached the mid-way mark of its spring season with a full slate of games on the weekend.

In Tyke play the Port Dover Steelheads2 ham a narrow 26-24 win over the Port Dover Steelheads1 while the Hamilton Orange Hurricanes beat the Hamilton Black Hurricanes, 19-12.

Atom action featured two shutouts with the Hamilton Black Hurricanes blanking the Hamilton Orange Hurricanes, 14-0, and the Niagara Storm closing the door on the Port Dover Steelheads, 18-0.

The Hamilton Orange Hurricanes proved just as stingy in Peewee play with a 35-0 victory over the Hamilton Blue Hurricane and the Niagara Storm were not to be outdone with their 34-0 decision over the Hamilton Black Hurricanes.

Bantam play saw Port Dover turn back the Hamilton Black Hurricanes, 18-6.

The HWMFA is already gearing up for this year’s Fall season by holding a Family Fun Day on June 8 in Rockton at its football dedicated MacRae Fields Complex located behind the Beverly Community Centre at 680 Hwy 8 in Rockton. Joe Sardo, director of minor development for the association, said the league, now into its 32nd season, is putting the family back into the grass roots game day experience.

“We are having all of the HWMFA teams and our partners from Port Dover and Niagara playing that day from the Spring League ages 7-14 to the OFC Rep teams 14-19,” he said.

“Our Spring teams are called the Hurricanes, so we have called the day HWMFA Hurricane Family Day. We will have face-painting, tug-o-war, pie-in-the-coaches face, a bouncy castle, QB toss and many other activities for families. We have over 500 players playing that day, plus their siblings, parents, and friends coming out.”

There will be free parking and no charge to enter the carnival area.

In the Fall, the association through its partnership with the Canadian Football League Hamilton Tiger-Cat, will adopt the Ticats’ name and colours as teams travel to play other region’s in Ontario.

Family Day for the minor levels and Ontario Football Conference varsity football runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Additional details can be found at HWMFA.COM. The carnivals will open at 10 a.m. and run till 5 p.m.

Grass roots football teams (ages 7-14) play from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with varsity (14-19) playing from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
