BR soccer boys off to good start

soccer_fullTop-seeded Bishop Ryan Celtics picked up a win and a tie on opening day of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Triple A boys’ soccer championship in Windsor on Thursday (June 6).

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association representatives defeated the North Bay Widdifield Wildcats, 1-0, and tied the hosts from Catholic Central, 0-0.

Michael Fortino had the goal for the Celtics.

Bishop Ryan, which last week won the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference title, is in a pool with Widdifield, Catholic Central, Cornwall St. Joseph’s and Niagara Falls Saint Michael. Twenty teams are competing and quarter-finals take place Friday at 5:15 p.m. at the Vollmer Complex.

Hamilton’s St. Mary Crusaders edged the Peterborough St. Peter’s Saints 1-0 on a goal by Corrine Robinson after losing 1-0 to Toronto Humberside. The other HWCAA entry in the 20-team field – the Bishop Ryan Celtics – fell 3-0 to Grimsby Blessed Trinity and 2-0 to St. Patrick’s of Thunder Bay.

Other teams in Bishop Ryan’s pool are top seeded Louis-Riel of Gloucester and Guelph St. James. St. Mary is also paired with Whitby’s Henry Street and Mississauga Iona.
