Three of Hamilton-Wentworth’s top hopes for medals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships advanced through qualifying heats on Thursday (June 6) at the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex.

The three-day provincial high school meet is scheduled to wrap up Saturday afternoon.

In the junior boys’ 400 metres, Robert Heppenstall of St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School qualified for the final with a time of 50.65 seconds. That was second only to Matthew LeLiever of Mississauga’s St. Marcellinus (50.61). Heppenstall won gold in the midget division of OFSAA last year.

In the senior girls’ 400m, Christian Brennan of St. Mary and Taysia Radoslav of Cardinal Newman each punched their ticket to the final with times of 56.57 and 58.20, respectively. Brennan, the defending champion, was the fastest qualifier.

Brennan and Heppenstall finished first last week at the South Regional meet.

Meaghan Rice of St. Mary also was in action, finishing sixth in the junior girls’ triple jump with a leap of 10.58 metres. The winner – Courtney Wright of Jacob Hespeler – recorded an 11.24 mark.
