Grimsby is golden, bronze eludes Bishop Ryan


ofsaaDuwayne Ewart scored the lone goal and Christopher Apostoli got credit for the shutout as Blessed Cardinal Newman of Scarborough defeated the Bishop Ryan Celtics, 1-0, for the bronze medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Triple A boys’ soccer championship in Windsor on Saturday (June 8).

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association representatives went into the 20-team tournament seeded No. 1.

Bishop Ryan finished pool play with two victories and two ties. The Celtics then topped Ottawa St. Pius X, 2-1, in a quarter-final playoff on penalty shots. In the semi-final round, Bishop Ryan fell to Etobicoke’s Silverthorn Spartans. Silverthorn went on to win the gold medal, edging Mississauga’s Joan of Arc, 2-1.

Sam DeAragao, with a pair, and Sharaeel Hormoz, scored goals for the Hamilton squad.

In the 20-team Triple A girls’ division, also held in Windsor, Hamilton’s St. Mary Crusaders and the Bishop Ryan Celtics were eliminated in pool play. On Friday, the Crusaders (2-2) got a goal by Alicia Robinson in their 1-0 victory over the defending champions from Mississauga Iona. However, St. Mary also dropped a 2-0 decision to Henry Street to bow out.

Top-seeded Louis-Riel of Gloucester blanked Bishop Ryan 4-0. The Celtics then got their first point in the standings with a 2-2 tie against Guelph St. James. Lydia Josipovic handled the scoring for BR.

The gold-medal final saw the Grimsby Blessed Trinity Thunder edge Louis-Riel Rebelles, 2-1. The bronze went to Toronto Humberside, 3-0 over Iona.
