Sean Reilly hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Cardinals, 12-10, in Intercounty Baseball League play Friday night (July 5) in Hamilton.
Reilly had a three-run homer and a solo shot, giving him six in a Leaf uniform since being acquired from the Guelph Royals a few weeks ago.
The Leafs scored seven runs in the third inning and managed to stave off a Cardinals’ comeback attempt to improve to 11-14 on the season, moving ahead of the Cardinals into fifth place in the IBL.
Rick Brooks started for the Leafs but was gone by the fourth inning after allowing seven runs – six earned – on 10 hits with one strikeout and three walks. Reliever Troy Marks earned the win for the Leafs with 2 2/3 shutout hitless innings, striking out three and walking two.
Justin Cicatello pitched the final three innings for Toronto and earned the save, allowing just one hit and one earned run with one strikeout.
Glenn Jackson also had a three-run home run for the Leafs and a single, finishing with three RBI and two runs scored. Jon Waltenbury had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI with a run scored, while Damon Topolie singled and doubled, adding two runs scored. Raul Borjas had a pair of hits and came in to score, while Branfy Arias also accounted for a pair of singles. Dan Marra added an RBI double and a run scored, while Rob Gillis rounded out the Toronto attack with a single and a run scored.
The Cardinals dropped to 10-15 on the season after starter Mike Elwood took the loss, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts over the first 3 1/3 innings.
Kyle Gappa had a pair of home runs for the Cardinals and finished with four RBI and two runs scored, while Andris Rizquez hit a three-run home run for the hosts.
Dan Jagdeo and Justin Malabanan each had a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Dre Celestijn had a pair of singles and a run scored. Johnathan Solazzo and Michael Gottschalk each singled and scored a run in the loss.
