Ottawa – Hamilton’s Ivan Marcisin has made the Canadian roster for the men’s tournament at the upcoming FINA World Water Polo Championships to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from July 19 to Aug. 4.
The 23-year-old Marcisin is a member of the Hamilton Aquatic Club.
The selected group includes Olympians Justin Boyd, Devon Diggle, Kevin Graham, Constantine Kudaba and Robin Randall (Beijing 2008). A large proportion of the team also played at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, where Canada finished 10th.
“Even though the group is young by international standards, the team has an established core who knows what to expect,” said head coach Alex Beslin. “We are also introducing some younger guys as we keep looking for ways to move our group of athletes to the next level.”
The men left Calgary on June 8 for a final training camp in Serbia ahead of the World Championships. The last weeks were dedicated to intense preparations, with the team undergoing a training camp in Montenegro in early June and then hosting their Serbian counterparts later in the month in Alberta.
“We only get to really measure ourselves against the best every few years,” said Beslin. “These games are critical in order to measure our progress, make sure we are on track and continue to move upward.” Beslin, a Calgary resident, will experience his first Worlds as head coach of the Canadians and will be assisted by Brian Parillo from Montreal.
The Canadians will meet South Africa (RSA) on Monday, July 22 in their first match of the preliminary round at the championships.
They will subsequently face Croatia (July 24) and the U.S.A. (July 26), in the competition’s Group B, while looking to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. A complete schedule and other details can be found at www.fina.org
