Cardinals unable to tame Panthers

ibl logoThe Kitchener Panthers opened the scoring with a five-run third inning and held the Hamilton Cardinals to just three runs in the fifth inning in winning their fourth straight Intercounty Baseball League game, 5-3, on Monday night (July 22).

The Panthers become the IBL’s third team this season to reach the 20-win mark (20-14). Marcos Reyna started for Kitchener but lasted just 3 1/3 innings so it was Mike Gatchene who picked up the win, allowing just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings pitched.

Bryon Bell had three hits for the Panthers and drove in a run, but also provided a relief appearance in the bottom of the ninth and surrendered three walks, loading the bases before finally registering the third and final out of the inning and earning the save. Iggy Villalobos had a pair of hits with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Keith Kandel had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Mike Andrulis, Darnell Duckett and Mike Winter each registered a hit and a run scored in the win.

Matt Martinow lasted a lengthy 7 2/3 innings but was charged with the loss, allowing nine hits and five runs – two earned – with one walk and three strikeouts.

Kyle Gappa was the only Cardinal with a multi-hit night, registering a pair of hits and a run scored with a run batted in. Anthony Rizquez and Dan Jagdeo each had a hit and drove in a run, with Jagdeo also adding a run scored. Dre Celestijn registered one hit and one run scored, while Andris Rizquez and Johnathan Solazzo each added a hit to round out the Cardinals offence in the loss.
