White re-writes record book

Swimming CanadaMONTREAL – Evan White of Oakville, Ont., lowered his second national 15-17 age group mark in less than a week on Wednesday (July 24) to open the 2013 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships at the Parc Jean-Drapeau Aquatic Complex.

White, who qualified for Canada’s world junior team last week at Summer Nationals, clocked 54.05 seconds in the men’s 17-18 age group 100-m butterfly to eclipse the previous record of 54.30 set by Curtis Lutsch of Calgary in 2008.

“It felt pretty good,” said White, who bettered his personal best by 0.7 seconds. “My breakouts were really strong.”

In the women’s 17-18 butterfly, Jacomie Strydom of Edmonton took the gold in a personal best 1:01.00. Strydom is tuning up to represent Alberta at the Canada Games next month in Shebrooke, Que.

Two other age group records were also lowered in the 100-m butterfly by Yang Ray of Etobicoke, Ont., in the boys 11-12 age group and Emil Goin of Cote-St-Luc, Que., in the boys 13-14 age group.

More than 900 athletes from 159 clubs are competing in the 12 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under and 16-18 age groups for the girls and the 13 and under, 14 and under, 15 and under, 16 and under and 17-18 age group for the boys.

Competition in the pool will conclude on Sunday.
