The Hamilton Nationals have clinched a play off berth for the third time in team history. Saturday’s night win over the Boston Cannons was lead by rookie Garrett Thul, who had a career best with 6 points (5+1+0). Within the first quarter he connected with Kevin Cunningham for two goals, one of which was his second two pointer of his career. Thul then went on in the fourth to score three more goals to seal the 17-12 win.
Kevin Crowley opened up the scoring for the Nationals and started a 4-goal streak with goals from Brett Queener, Thul, and Kevin Cunningham. Brett Queener scored his first MLL goal after stopping a shot from Boston’s leading scorer Paul Rabil and running up the field. Queener made a total of 17 stops through out the night, and held Rabil to just one two-point goal that didn’t come until the fourth quarter.
Kevin Cunningham tied his career high of five points, putting in two goals and three assists. He is currently just behind team mate Joe Walters in the league for assists with 21. Walters leads the league with 22.
The Nationals are on the road to Charlotte this weekend to take on the Hounds for the second time this season. The last match up they had was at home in May, when the Nationals came out on top 16-15 in over time. The next home game will be on August 10th, when the Nationals take on the undefeated and number one ranked Denver Outlaws.
