Golf_ball_resting_near_fairway_woodSeaforth – Toronto native and public course player Jack Simpson opened with a one-over par 72 on Tuesday (Aug. 13) to lead the field at the Ontario Bantam Boys’ Championship hosted by Seaforth Golf Club.

The 14-year-old delivered the best performance of the day, laying down birdies on the 3rd, 4th and 15th holes, while giving back bogeys on holes 2 and 6 and dropping a double bogey on the 11th to earn a single stroke lead. Play was to conclude on Wednesday for Ontario’s best junior boys age 15 and younger.

Two golfers currently share second place; 14-year-old Damon Crane of Oakville, a member at Lionhead Golf and Country Club, and Tecumseh resident Curtis Hughes, 13, a member of Beach Grove Golf and Country Club. Both golfers fired opening round two-over par 73s.

Four golfers are tied for fourth place after delivering identical three-over par 74s. Caledonia resident and Dundas Valley member Aidan Gavey, Jordy Denomme of Waterloo, a member at Whistle Bear Golf Club, Zack Mason of Toronto, from Donalda Club, and Guelph resident and Cutten Fields member Anthony Occhiuto, will all try to make up for the two-shot deficit they share heading into the final 18 holes of competition.

Other Hamilton-Niagara area golfers included: Marcus Khaw, Burlington, GAO Public Player, and Henry Luel, Oakville, Toronto Golf Club, both at 76 (+5) and tied for ninth; Vince Friyia, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines G&CC; Vincent Dicosimo, Niagara Falls, Peninsula Lakes GC; and Justin DiCienzo, Niagara Falls, Peninsula Lakes GC, all at 77 (+6) and tied for 15th; Mitch Borer, Ancaster, Dundas Valley G&CC; and Nicholas MacLean, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines G&CC, with 78s (+7) and tied for 20th; Ben Simmonds, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines G&CC, 80 (+9), tied for 28th; and Jack Allan, St. Catharines, St. Catharines G&CC, 84 (+13), tied for 42.
