After falling behind by two goals, the Ancaster Avalanche scored three unanswered second period markers that produced a 4-3 overtime pre-season Golden Horseshoe Junior B hockey game on Sunday night (Aug. 18).
The win, the second in as many nights over the Welland Canadians, left the Avs with a 2-0 exhibition record to mark their inaugural season in Ancaster. The franchise played in Stoney Creek last season as the Warriors.
Playing in Welland on Sunday, the Avalanche got second period markers from Blake Lumsden (power play), Ryan Lewis (unassisted), and Ryan Knill to pull ahead 3-2.
Jack Fitzgerald and Braydon Stortz had given the Canadians a 2-0 first period lead. Welland pulled even when Eric Cerino scored early in the third period to set the stage for overtime.
Chris Smith’s marker just 1:53 into the extra session gave Ancaster the victory.
Ancaster outshot the Canadians, 34-33, before a crowd of 443.
The Avs will compete in a tournament in Port Colborne Aug. 23-25 before their third pre-season game on Aug. 29 against the Guelph Hurricanes at Ancaster’s Morgan Firestone Arena at 7:30 p.m.
