Not only did McMaster win its season – and home – opener but the Marauders scored an Ontario University Athletics Player of the Week in the process.
Fourth-year defensive back Scott Martin racked up 12 solo tackles to earn the weekly defensive honour in the Marauders’ 51-24 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday (Aug. 25).
The London, Ont., native totaled 15 solo tackles in six games last season and is poised to smash his personal best this year. Martin also broke up two passes on Sunday.

The offensive player of the week is Windsor Lancers quarterback Austin Kennedy. Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) led the Lancers to an impressive 78-11 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, which set a Windsor team record for most points scored in a single game.
The fourth-year quarterback went 24-for-28 totaling 335 yards and six touchdowns in the air, and added 108 yards rushing and one touchdown on 13 carries.
On special teams, the honour goes to Queen’s Gaels kick returner Giovanni Aprile. The Scarborough, Ont., native and fourth-year returner, ran back a 115-yard missed field-goal attempt for a score in Queen’s 52-1 rout of the York Lions.
Aprile, who also plays as a receiver, finished with two punt returns for 122 yards, one kick-return for 25 yards and three more touchdowns.
