The Hamilton Wentworth Minor Football Association began its new era in the Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) this past weekend … but came up short on the scoreboard.
Of seven games played across age groups HWMFA won three and lost four in a series of contests played against the Twin Cities (Kitchener-Waterloo) Warhawks and the Guelph Bears.
The HWMFA fall teams have always been known as the Panthers but earlier this year the association formed an alliance with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats and teams are now called the Tiger-Cats.
On Friday (Aug. 30) playing on their home McRae Fields the Pee Wee AA Tiger-Cats were shutout, 33-0, by the Warhawks. The Tykes1 team even the score with a 12-0 whitewash of the Warhawks1 squad on Saturday (Aug 31) in Kitchener.
The following day the Tykes2 team gave the Tiger-Cats the edge when they clawed the host Guelph Bears, 45-6. But that same day, the Atom AAs fell 20-6 to Warhawks to balance the scorebook.
Twin Cities then took two of the remaining three games. The Ticats Atom AAAs were 24-6 victors over the Warhawks but the Pee Wee AAAs fell 19-0 and the Bantam AA Tabbies lost 28- 22.
