The McMaster Marauders found the scoring touch that they’ve been missing, striking three times in the second half to defeat the Waterloo Warriors, 3-1, in Ontario University Athletics men’s soccer play on Saturday (Sept. 7).
The result marks the defending OUA champions’ first win of the season (1-1-1).
On the road for a weekend away from home, McMaster couldn’t find a breakthrough in the opening half, and entered the break locked in a scoreless draw with Waterloo. But fourth-year striker Santino Gagliano changed the landscape of the match entirely in the second half, scoring twice in quick succession and putting the Marauders up 2-0 in the 55th minute.
Gersi Xhuti, returning to the Marauder lineup, extended the lead from the penalty spot, slotting home in the 70th minute to make it a 3-0 game. Waterloo scored a consolation marker in the 87th minute, when Mohamed Aborig scored from the penalty spot to eliminate the clean sheet.
The Marauders are back in action Sunday (Sept. 8), when they conclude their weekend road trip with a visit to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers (0-1-2). The opening whistle is slated for 3:15 p.m.
