Zach Nieminen and Jake Milligan, inspired by a 91-year-old two-time Stanley Cup champion, scored five goals between them as Ancaster trounced the Buffalo Blades, 10-3, in the Avalanche’s inaugural home opener before several hundred Golden Horseshoe Conference hockey fans Saturday night (Sept. 7) in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
Ancaster resident Leo Reise, Jr., was on hand to drop the ceremonial puck and launch the Avalanche’s (formerly the Stoney Creek Warriors) first season in the Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League. The game marked the return of Junior B to the community for the first time in 20 years.
Nieminen scored three times and Milligan added two more for the Avs with single goals going to Elijah Williams, Eric Eustace, Michael Pollice, Luke Zupan, and Harrison Domagala. Matthew Shumate, Colton Anstey and Colin Farell replied for the Blades.
Ancaster outshot Buffalo 30-18 while picking up two goals on powerplays, and another shorthanded. Buffalo had one powerplay goal.
Next action for the Avalanche is in Buffalo, Tuesday (Sept. 10) at 7 p.m. at Buffalo State University. Their next home action is against Thorold Blackhawks on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Firestone Arena.
