Having found the scoring touch the day before, the Marauder men’s soccer team continued to fill the net on Sunday (Sept. 8) when McMaster scored three goals – including two in the span of two minutes courtesy of midfielder Nate Morris — en route to a 3-1 victory over the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines.
The win completed a weekend sweep for the Marauders (2-1-1), who moved into the congested upper tier of Ontario University Athletics West play after a slow start to their season.
McMaster got off to a dream start on Sunday, opening the scoring in only the second minute of play, when midfield playmaker Gersi Xhuti tallied his second goal of the year. The host Badgers quickly regrouped, however, and levelled the match in the 19th minute, when Erik Van Wissen made the most of a Brock breakthrough.
The scoreline remained the same as the halftime whistle blew, but would change radically in the Marauders favour early in the second frame.
Morris ventured forward from his midfield role and struck in the 55th minute to nudge McMaster ahead, and poached a second goal just two minutes later to give his team a measure of insurance. That inspired period was all that the visitors needed, as McMaster held on to win without further incident, and grabbed all six points up for grabs during the weekend.
The defending OUA champions have righted the ship, and can next be seen at Ron Joyce Stadium, where they host the OUA East-leading York Lions (4-0-0) on Friday, Sept. 13. Game time for that encounter is 7:15 p.m.
