Real McCoys add two more building blocks

1-real_mccoy-orillia-7Two more players, with professional experience in Europe, will wear the colours of the Dundas Real McCoys for the 2013-14 Allan Cup Hockey season.

The two additions to the roster are Ryan Crane and Joseph (Joey) Koudys. Crane, a defenceman, performed in the East Coast Hockey League and the United Hockey League before heading to Europe. Koudys is a local product who played at the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association level before going to Europe for the past two seasons.

“Ryan is solid defenceman, and we were very pleased to land him. His offensive flair will help us as well as his pro experience. We are definitely looking forward to Ryan’s contribution to the McCoys this season,” said McCoys president and general manager Don Robertson.

The Real McCoys are this season’s hosts for Senior AAA hockey’s cherished Allan Cup. The tournament will be played in April.

Crane, 33, is a six-foot, 205-pound right-handed defenceman. He was born at Mississauga on June 27, 1980, and played for the Western Michigan University Broncos in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association from 1999-2002 before turning pro in the ECHL. He was a regular performer in the league from 2002 through 2012 with various teams beginning with Atlantic City Boardwalk Bulldogs and culminating with Reading Royals.

Crane also played for Kalamazoo and Muskegon in the United Hockey League as well as Lillehammer IHK in Norway, Rødovre IK in Denmark, and Edinburgh Capitals and Belfast Giants of the Elite Ice Hockey League. Last season with Belfast, Crane scored eight goals and had 19 assists for 27 points in 48 games. Overall, he has played 474 games professionally during his 11-year career.

“Joey Koudy’s a local kid who was very productive in Europe following his college career. According to our sources his speed is second to none, and he has very quick hands,” said Robertson.

“He isn’t a big player, but he certainly looks as though he could lift up my truck if he wanted to. It may take him a bit of time to get used to the Senior game, but I’m sure he’ll do just fine as we move along through the season”

Koudys, 25, is a five-foot, 11-inch, 185-pound right-winger who was born at Grimsby on March 28, 1988. He played the 2005-06 season with the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League before attending the University of Alabama at Huntsville from 2008 to 2011. At the conclusion of his college career, he moved on to the Hannover Braves and Essen [ESC Moskitos] in the German Third Division. In 68 games in the German league in 2011-12 and 2012-13, he scored 72 goals and had 166 points, and just 36 minutes in penalties.
