The Atom Steel City Steelers ran over the Guelph Bears, 44-0, on Saturday at Mohawk Sports Park in one of two Central Ontario Minor Football League games the Hamilton league played over the weekend.
Quarterback Josh Omojafo led the way with three rushing touchdowns as well as throwing for one more. Cameron Sweet scored on a pass from Omojafo. Yohan Tshimbalanga got into the act rushing for two TDs and not to be outdone, the Steelers defence dominated their opponents all day, limiting them to negative total yards and four turnovers.
Riley Mercer and Memphis Mount forced fumbles and Jahiem Merrifield returned an interception for a score. The win improves the Atom Steelers record to 3-0 on the year.
The Atom Steelers will take on the Twin Cities Predators’ purple squad at Mohawk Sports Park, on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 12:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, at Wayne Gretzky Park in Brantford, the Tyke Steel City Steelers pulled off a 36-6 victory over the Brantford Bisons. Steel City was led by their smothering defence which once again allowed no points as the Bisons’ only score came on a kick return.
On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Ryder Mount led the way with three rushing majors and threw for another. Wide receiver Jesse Sweet took a screen pass 40 yards for a major and added another on the ground.
Running back Francesco Modica added another, leaving tacklers all over as he broke free for the score
The victory moves the Tyke Steelers to 3-0 on the season. They play again this Saturday (Sept. 21) at Mohawk Sports Park starting at 11 a.m., also against the visiting Twin Cities Predators’ purple.
