Brittany Roberto was named the Most Valuable Player as she led Hamilton’s Bishop Ryan Celtics to a championship win at the Villanova College senior girls’ high school basketball tournament in King City.
Roberto scored 36 points in Bishop Ryan’s three games.
The final saw the Celtics top the host Villanova Knights, 64-45. Top scorers for BR were Kara Manning, with 14 points, and Stephanie Sousa, with 13.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association entry opened the tournament with a 53-34 victory over the Bill Crothers Colts of Markham. Ariana DiPietro paced the Celtics attack with 16 points, while Roberto netted 14 and Reese Mungar added 12.
In its second game, Bishop Ryan got nine points by Mungar en route to a 42-25 decision over Richmond Hill’s St. Theresa of Liseaux Lions.
“It’s nice to get a little respite from league play every now and then,” said coach Kevin Daly, whose Celtics compete in the same loop that includes the St. Mary Crusaders and the St. Thomas More Knights, winners at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Triple A and Quad A levels for each of the past two seasons.
