The Mohawk men’s and women’s basketball teams scored victories over Seneca in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association pre-season action at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre on Tuesday (Sept. 24).
The Mountaineer women downed the Sting, 74-36. Lacey Wolters led the attack with 13 points, while Allyson De Lorenzi and Carissa Browne scored 12 apiece. Head coach Kevin Duffy said that for a first game it was an excellent start for his team.
“We had limited sets and dressed only eight players, but we moved the ball really well and our decision making on offence was tremendous,” said Duffy. “There were a lot of positives that we can build on going into our tourney this weekend at Fleming. Our depth especially is going to be a key factor all season.”
The Mohawk men downed Seneca, 79-59. Four veterans led the way as Alex Reis scored 18 points, Andrew Cicuttini had 15 points and 15 rebounds, Taylor Dowhaniuk scored 10 and added 15 boards and Xzennis Brereton contributed 14 points.
Despite the 20 point win, Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker described it as a sloppy opener.
“We have a long way to go to be a contender,” said Jonker, “but we have the experience and the pieces to do so. Our goal, as always, will be to win a championship.”
