Mohawk drops two with make-shift pitching crew

baseball2The Mohawk women’s fastball team remained winless in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play this season after the Durham Lords downed them 5-3 and 15-0 in Oshawa on Thursday (Sept. 26).

The Mountaineers had to deal with the fact their two pitchers, Niki Grover and Laura Chappel, were both unavailable for the doubleheader.

So Tamara Cochrane (Hagersville), who has pitching experience but has been Mohawk’s first baseman, was handed the ball in the opener. And she did very well, allowing three runs over four innings. She was replaced by centre fielder Stephanie Duffin (Brantford) who allowed the other two runs.

Lindsey Rivet (Fort Erie) was 2-for-3 with a double, Stephanie Ferretti (St. George) was 2-for-4 with a triple and Nicole Cain (Mississauga) was also 2-for-4.

Lydia Kalbfleisch picked up the win for Durham and Cochrane lost.

In the nightcap, Cochrane was back to start and Duffin was summoned from the outfield again when Cochrane experienced a sore arm. Again it was a tight contest with the score 3-0 for the Lords going into the fourth inning when the home team exploded for 12 runs.

Ashley Black was the winner for Durham, now 5-3. Cochrane was again tagged with the loss for Mohawk which dropped to 0-9.
