After dropping the first set, the Mohawk women’s volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 pre-season win at Fanshawe on Wednesday (Sept. 25). The scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 29-27.
Mountaineers’ coach Andrew Nicholson said returnee Chi Chi Chuks Mady (Hamilton Barton) showed a strong presence on the outside, consistently finishing rallies with defensive kills. Tina Tran, a true ‘walk-on’ from Hamilton Cathedral excelled on defence, as she made her Ontario Colleges Athletic Association debut at the demanding Libero position and passed the ball with precision.
The coach said it was a good test for five rookies – Tran, Natalie Przerwa (Hamilton Bishop Ryan), Kirsten Bialachowski (Bishop Ryan), Kristann Wiens (Kitchener Grand River Collegiate Institute) and Mackenzie Pulham, (Brantford Pauline Johnson).
“Fanshawe is a perennial powerhouse in the West,” said Nicholson. “They play at a faster pace than most teams that these kids would have seen before. Unfortunately, we only faced the majority of their starters in the first set but we competed well regardless.”
The Mountaineers are right back at it at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre Thursday (Sept. 26) when the Redeemer Royals pay a visit.
