Mohawk had a lopsided win and a narrow defeat at the Fleming Invitational Women’s Basketball Tournament in Peterborough on Saturday (Sept. 28).
The Mountaineers romped over the host Fleming Knights 65-18 in game one, as Stef Hrymak had 15 points and Katelyn Arbour hooped 13.
Head coach Kevin Duffy said his team showed it’s quickness. “We did a great job of using our speed to create turnovers and finish our fast break opportunities,” said Duffy. “It was nice to have balanced scoring with four players in double digits.”
In the second game, the Durham Lords nipped the Mountaineers 54-53. Porscha Hewitt and Natalie Fisher each scored 11 points.
“We were very sluggish at the start and were down by 11 at the half,” said Duffy. “In the second half we played with way more pace, took the lead, but couldn’t make free throws to seal the game as we went 3-for-10 at the line in the fourth quarter alone.”
