McMaster rugby players try and succeed

headshot_1_AndrewFergusonMcMaster’s rugby teams sweep the Marauders Pita Pit athletes of the week awards this week with Andrew Ferguson and Madolyn Vande Pol taking the title for the week of Sept. 23-29.

Ferguson, a fourth-year scrum half, displayed his versatility in leading the Marauders to a 22-19 victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday (Sept. 28).

Ferguson successfully kicked a convert and a penalty goal in the first half as McMaster took a 10-7 lead into the break. It was the veteran’s try in the 67th minute, however, that proved decisive. Ferguson kicked the covert to push his point total on the afternoon to 12, and the Marauders lead to eight, as McMaster withstood a late Brock charge to claim the win.

Vande Pol scored all 10 of her points in the opening half, twice breaking through for tries as McMaster put up 17 against the nation’s best in the first half. The Gryphons would go on to win in the second, but Saturday effort was an encouraging result for the Marauders.
