The following student-athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics football players of the week for the period ending Sept.29.
Receiver Alex Charette (St. Catharines) amassed 211 all-purpose yards in Guelph’s’ 41-19 victory over Waterloo on Saturday (Sept. 28) to earn the Special Teams honour.
The 6-foot-1 receiver fashioned a game-changing missed field goal return into a 125-yard run back for a touchdown with two minutes remaining in the first half. In addition to being a starting receiver who caught four passes for 42 yards, the speedster tallied punt returns for 15 yards and one kickoff return for 29 yards.
On offence, the award goes to Simon Nassar, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues quarterback.
The third-year passer completed 26-of-39 passes for 343 yards and four touchdowns leading the Blues to a convincing 50-10 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Friday night. The Toronto native threw for a game-long 47-yard completion on Toronto’s first play of the game, 149 yards in the first quarter and capped it off with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Alex Pierzchalski.
A fourth-year English major, Nassar found Pierzchalski two more times and rookie Llevi Noel once in the end zone en route to the dominant victory.
The defensive player of the week is Justin Baronaitis of Queen’s University Gaels
Baronaitis (Rexdale, Ont.) was a terror on the field during Saturday’s 50-31 loss to Western. The defensive back finished with 11.5 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a pass making his presence felt in London. His tackles led all players in the game and he now has 31.5 tackles on the season.
