ANCASTER —Two powerplay goals by Mike Pollice enabled Ancaster Avalanche to run their winning streak to two games as they edged the Fort Erie Meteors, 4-3, in Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B Hockey action Thursday (Oct. 3) in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
The game, however, was not without its moments of high anxiety. With 29 seconds left to play in the second period, Ancaster’s Jake Bain hauled down Fort Erie’s Braden Kavaratzis as he raced in on the net, and incurred a penalty shot. Kavaratzis drifted in from centre ice, and drilled a shot at Ancaster’s newly acquired goaltender, Braydon Banitsiotis, who signed today from the Stouffville Spirit of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Banitsiotis stopped him cold and the match turned in the Avs favour.
The two clubs play a return engagement on Saturday night in the Fort Erie Leisure Plex at 7:15 p.m.
Also scoring for Ancaster were Luke Zupan and Cole Nagy. Nigel Slade, Kavaratzis (shorthanded), and Jesse Pereira replied for Fort Erie.
At the next Avalanche home game, “Thanks 2 U Thursday”, two dollar tickets will be offered to all participants and coaches in Ancaster girls and boys minor hockey, and the Ancaster Figure Skating Club. But they must wear their team sweaters, team jackets, and/or team uniforms, or Ancaster Avalanche Merchandise.
“Thanks 2 U Thursday” on Oct. 10 is the lead-up to the Thanksgiving weekend when the Avalanche will take on the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs in the Firestone Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
