The McMaster Marauders got off to an encouraging start but the Brock Badgers rallied with eight consecutive goals for an 8-1 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association win at Alumni Field.
The setback left McMaster with a 2-5 record.
McMaster opened the scoring just over five minutes into the first period when Mark Phillips found the back of the net to put the Marauders up 1-0. It appeared that McMaster had scored again in the period, but a goal from Ryan Adams was called back for a foot in the crease.
The Marauders managed to hit the post three times over the course of Wednesday’s (Oct. 2) game.
The Marauders trailed 2-1 after the opening quarter.
The Badgers were led by Kyle Davis, who scored three goals. Brock scored three goals in the second quarter to extend their lead to 5-1. They added two more in the third and one in the fourth to complete the offence.
Once again second-year goalie Max Yavitt (Ithica, NY) had a solid game in net, facing 24 shots from the Badgers. Although the offence struggled on the night, the McMaster coaching staff was generally pleased with its defence.
“When your opponent has the ball for more than 60 minutes of the game and you limit a very offensively gifted team like Brock to only three even strength goals, you know that your defence and goalie did their jobs,” said McMaster head coach Jason Tallevi.
The Marauders next home game will take place on Oct. 11 against Toronto.
