Albertan-turned-Texan ousts Burlington’s Green

Racquetball5Minneapolis, Minn.- Burlington’s Mike Green has been eliminated from the 18th US Open Racquetball Championships.

Green, competing in the men’s singles pro division, lost to Texan Kane Waselenchuk, the No. 1 seed in the tournament in the Round of 32 on Thursday night (Oct. 3). Set scores were 11-0, 11-5, 11-4.

Waselenchuk, a native of Edmonton, is trying to win his ninth US Open Championship and his sixth straight title.

Meanwhile Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta. had a career best finish at the championships, reaching the Round of 16 in the men’s pro – division.

Iwaasa, already a Racquetball Canada National Elite Team player at age 17, came back to defeat 11th seed American Alex Ackermann in the Round of 32, 9-11, 9-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-0. But in the 16s, he faced 6th seed Chris Crowther (USA), who gave the young Iwaasa a lesson in racquetball excellence, winning 11-0, 11-2, 11-0.

Vincent Gagnon of Montreal lost his Round of 32 match to IRT #2 Rocky Carson, 11-1, 11-6, 11-3.

On the women’s side in the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) competition, Canadian Champion Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg was seeded 10th but suffered a heartbreaking loss to 24th seed Aubrey Kirch (USA) in a tie-breaker, losing 5-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 12-10.

However, Frédérique Lambert of Montreal, the 17th seed, won her match against American Hailey Miller, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5. But she’ll have her work cut out for her in her next match, as Lambert will face the #1 women’s player in the world, Paola Longoria of Mexico, who hasn’t lost a match since May 2011.
