Falcons overcome Mountaineers in women’s soccer

MohawkThe Mohawk women’s soccer team scored first, but could not hold on and dropped a 2-1 decision to the Fanshawe Falcons in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play in London on Saturday (Oct. 5).

Rachelle DeJong put the Mountaineers in front in the 32nd minute and they held the 1-0 margin at half time.

However, just a minute after the re-start, Nicole McDonald tied the score for Fanshawe and Alex Chesney won it for the hometown Falcons in the 70th minute.

With the win, Fanshawe moved into a tie for third place in the West, while the Mountaineers are tied for fifth with Lambton.

Mohawk has one game left in the regular season and that is against Redeemer on Monday (Oct. 7) at 4:30 p.m. at the Redeemer Sports Complex. Both the Mountaineers and Royals play out of Redeemer. Officially it will be Mohawk’s home game.

Then next week, the Mountaineers will be involved in a qualifying game, hoping to advance to the OCAA Championship.
