ANCASTER — Luke Zupan’s powerplay goal at 14:30 of the third period for the Ancaster Avalanche spoiled Colin Furlong’s bid for a shutout as the Avs fell, 4-1, to the league-leading Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs before the club’s biggest crowd of the season – 483 fans – Thursday night (Oct. 10) in Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B Hockey action in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
For Caledonia, Connor Murphy (shorthanded), Greg Christmas, Cody Brown (penalty shot), and Cosimo Fontana (powerplay) scored once each. Caledonia has won 11 straight games. Ancaster is in fourth place.
The night had a special feel as the Avalanche said thank you to their supporters with “Thanks 2 U Thursday” two-dollar home game tickets. All participants and coaches in Ancaster Girls and Boys Minor Hockey, and the Ancaster Figure Skating Club who wore their team sweaters, team jackets, and/or team uniforms, or Avalanche Merchandise were admitted to the game for two-dollars.
EJ Scala of the AA Avalanche stole the show in the second-period intermission shootout when the Cornish Hen he shot from the left faceoff landed within a few feet of the centre-ice faceoff dot thus giving him and his family their Thanksgiving Turkey courtesy of Brian Biemann Chartered Accounting.
The next action for the Avalanche is Friday (Oct. 11) at Port Colborne against the Pirates in the West Side Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Avs play at Thorold next Thursday before returning home to meet the Niagara Falls Canucks on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Firestone Arena.
